Outstanding Special Interest Group Chair Award


The purpose of this award is to recognize a Sports Physical Therapy Section (SPTS) member who has made substantial contributions to the success of one or more SPTS Special Interest Groups (SIG) through leadership, influence and achievement during tenure as SIG chair.


1. Nominee must be a physical therapist who is a current SPTS member and a member in good standing of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). 

2. Nominee must have served as Chair of a SIG within SPTS.

3. Nominee must have made contributions to the success of the SIG by their role in at least one of the following  

  • Membership growth
  • Global promotion and social media activity
  • Dissemination of information
  • Publications
  • Membership involvement/activity
  • Service to the SPTS

4. Members of the Awards Committee shall not be eligible for the award.  

5. If an Executive Committee member should be nominated during their term in office, the nominee shall remove him/herself from all subsequent Awards discussions.


Criteria for Selection (depth, scope and quality of contributions in each of the following)

1.     Exceptional leadership effectiveness in the SIG

2.     Distinct expertise in the SIG specialty area and commitment as a mentor or role model with the area as evidenced by letters of support

3.     Service to the SIG through creative activities that can include but are not limited to:

a.     Membership growth

b.     Global promotion and social media activity

c.     Dissemination of information

d.     Membership involvement/activity

e.     Publications

f.      Service to the SPTS

4.     The nominee must be able to attend APTA Combined Sections Meeting for award presentation.


Nomination Procedure

1. Any member of the SPTS may nominate candidates for the award.  A member may self-nominate.  A maximum of one (1) award will be given in any year.

2. Nomination packages must be submitted with the current SPTS nomination form provided by the Awards Committee.  The nominator is responsible for submitting identified documents in a single electronic award package. Nominations will not be accepted via mail. Packages must be submitted simultaneously to the Awards Committee Chair and the Executive Director.

3. The nomination package must include:

a.     Nomination form. Only the official nomination form will be accepted.

b.     Support statement (letter) from the nominator, not to exceed two (2) pages, including reasons for the nomination

c.     Current and complete curriculum vitae of the nominee

d.     Letters of support from two (2) individuals who can specifically address one or more of the criteria for selection, not to exceed two (2) pages. At least one letter should come from a member of the SIG.


Notification of the Award

            The Awards Committee Chair will notify the recipient of the award and obtain confirmation of acceptance.  The name of the recipient will be kept confidential until announced.


The Award and its presentation

            The award will consist of an award and recognition at the SPTS Awards Ceremony at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting.
