ABOUT THE EMR COURSE

This course is designed to be flexible and will meet, or exceed, the objectives set forth by the Department of Transportation. The course is designed specifically for the physical therapist working in providing sideline and courtside coverage for athletic events. Additionally, the course fulfills the requirements for a physical therapist to be eligible to submit their application for the ABPTS – SCS examination.

The course materials also include video presentations, slides, transparencies and hands-on laboratory sessions. Successful completion of both written and practical examinations is required for this course. Final practical examination will include successful completion of the following: bleeding control and shock management, trauma victim assessment and management, airway insertion and suction, management of injuries to soft tissue and skeletal structures and management of head, neck and back injuries.

PREPARATION FOR THE COURSE

A certain amount of pre-course preparation is required. Please register in time to secure the materials you will need for this. You will be required to obtain both a course text and workbook. To find out more about where to obtain the proper materials, follow this link.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This course is normally taught over 56 hours or a semester course at many community colleges.  Due to the fact that our student population is physical therapists with many hours of medical training, we are authorized by the American Red Cross (ARC) to teach this course in a much shorter time frame.  The ARC, however, wants to ensure competence and quality and for this reason each student must complete the workbook each time they take the challenge and full course.

A workbook is not required for the 1-day recertification course unless there has been a revision to the workbook since the student last took the course

INSTRUCTOR TO STUDENT RATIO

To facilitate effective learning, the instructor to student ratio is one instructor for fifteen students.

Did You Know?
According to a research review conducted by the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council:

  • CPR skill retention begins to decline within a few months after a participant is trained and progressively decreases for about a year.
  • Less than half of course participants can pass a skills test one year after training.

First Aid, CPR and AED

The American Red Cross recommends that you complete a Refresher every 3 months to keep your knowledge and skills sharp so you feel ready to respond – at home, at school, at your workplace, in your community or as a professional rescuer.

COURSE INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

Approximately two weeks prior to the course you will receive an email from the lead instructor or a staff member of Cogent Steps informing you of details of the course to include exact location, parking and any specifics of the location. We rely on our generous hosts including clinicians and clinics for support for our course locations.

Both the three day full course and the one day recertification course usually run 8 am-5 pm each day. On the third day of a full course challenge students should arrive at 8 am unless other arrangements have been made with the lead instructor.  On that last day the course may finish slightly earlier than 5 pm. If you have travel concerns please let the lead instructor know ahead of time and accommodations can be coordinated.

Once a student signs up for a course they should order the instructional materials needed. There are different requirements for the three courses:

A NEW WORKBOOK must be completed for students taking the full three-day EMR course or for the three-hour challenge.

Those students taking the one day recertification course do not need to submit a workbook.

The workbook should be completed before class as we do not spend time on the workbook during class. The workbook is a requirement at this time due to our relationship with the SPTS and ARC for the full and challenge courses.

Students should have the text book either hard copy or electronic for the courses and to review prior to testing.

ALL students must have an adult/infant CPR mask set for ALL courses.

For students taking the full EMR course, the following items must be purchased:

  • You may choose to purchase the hard copy text book or download it onto your device:  #656540, Emergency Medical Response Textbook, Rev 6/11,  ($69.95)

Failure at the challenge requires members to take a complete EMR course for recertification.
