Restricted Hip Mobility: Clinical Suggestions for Self-Mobilization and Muscle Re-education

Authors: Reiman MP, Matheson JW

Restricted hip mobility has shown strong correlation with various pathologies of the hip, lumbar spine, and lower extremity. Restricted mobility can have deleterious effects not only at the involved joint, but also throughout the entire kinetic chain. The authors suggest that self-mobilization and an accompanying home program for the purpose of complementing skilled, in clinic intervention is advisable for those clients that respond favorably to such treatment while in the clinic. This clinical suggestion offers ideas for self-mobilization of the hip as well as movement-based exercises to reinforce proper movement strategies.
