The ER SIG met in San Diego at CSM 2010 to discuss the issues facing those individuals interested in teaching ERC to Physical Therapists.  There are currently 10-12 instructors, who are certified through the American Red Cross, to teach the ERC.  There are also only 3 individuals, Danny Smith, PT, DHSc, OCS, SCS, ATC, Tara Manal, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS and Laura Schmitt, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, ATC, who are certified to train individuals who are interested in becoming certified to teach ERC.  Anyone interested in becoming a certified American Red Cross instructor with emphasis in acute care athletic management, should contact Danny Smith at

Several years ago, the ER SIG committed to holding a minimum of 4 ERC per year as well as being cognizant to have national representation of location the ERC was held.  In 2009, there were a total of 18 ERC held.  This was a big accomplishment and ER SIG is committed to continuing to provide as many courses as possible throughout the United States.  There are currently at least 10 ERC scheduled for 2010.  If you are interested in hosting an ERC, please contact Danny Smith, PT, DHSc, OCS, SCS, ATC at

The ER SIG is currently planning programming for CSM 2011.  The programming will be focused on presenting the results of a study being run by Patrick Cross, PT, DPT, EMT-B from the University of South Dakota, addressing how to prepare Physical Therapists to assess and manage acute sports injuries in underserved areas.  We are looking forward to hosting this programming to also increase awareness of the purpose of the Emergency Response training.  It is most certainly important for those of us who participate in sideline game coverage, but more importantly, it is becoming a foundation for Physical Therapists as they are commonly the "most medical" when a given situation arises.  We look forward to seeing many of you in New Orleans next year!
